Product Photos with Rulers: Avoid Perspective

Check the measurement plane

See whether the ruler sits along the relevant product surface or in front of or behind it. Different distances from the camera can distort the comparison. A ruler on the table is not an exact reference for a raised feature elsewhere in the photograph.

Identify both endpoints

Ask for the zero mark at the starting point, with the other end and the unit visible. If the ruler starts at another number, subtract that starting value. Distinguish the main body, decorative projections, internal openings and external dimensions before deciding which length is relevant.

Request a direct view and a number

A straight view helps explain where the ruler is placed. Still request the value in writing when fit is important. If the photograph and written number disagree, ask for clarification instead of choosing whichever dimension happens to suit the space you have available.

Keep a decision record
