Flat Width or Body Circumference?

Identify whether a size chart measures the body or the garment, and whether its number is flat width or circumference. Doubling a flat width gives an approximate garment circumference, not a guaranteed body fit.

Define the measurement

Flat width runs from one edge to the other; circumference goes around the body or garment. Look for a diagram showing the measuring point. A heading that only says chest leaves the method unclear.

A worked example

A garment measuring 50 cm flat has an approximate circumference of 100 cm at that level without stretching. These example dimensions do not mean it fits every body with a 100 cm chest.

Allow for wearing ease

Garment and body measurements may differ because of the cut, material and intended ease. Compare a comfortable garment using the same method instead of treating every difference as a chart error.

Ask before converting

Send the chart and ask whether it measures the body or product, flat or around. Keep the answer with the model and size. Do not double a number that already represents circumference.

Common questions

Should I double every number?

Only double a flat width when estimating circumference at that same level.

Should garment and body circumference match?

Not necessarily; the cut and wearing ease affect the difference.

What if there is no diagram?

Ask what the number measures before choosing a size.
