Folding Items: Include the Hinge in Packing

Measure a folding item at its largest hinge or lock projection after securing it as instructed. The folded flat surface alone does not define its packed height.

Find the largest projection

After folding according to the instructions, identify the furthest hinge, lock or handle. Measure to that point rather than only to the flat panel surface.

Transport and use locks differ

Check for a device intended to hold the item folded. A lock for the open position does not necessarily secure it during transport, and a tight strap may load a sensitive hinge.

Protect the hinge area

Mention the projection when discussing packing. A tight carton could concentrate force on the hinge; appropriate protection and movement control can increase the final dimensions.

Check parts before closing

Record the folding item and any separate pin or strap included. Request the final outside carton dimensions, and do not compare an open product measurement in one quote with a folded measurement in another.
