Inspect the structure
Inspect corners, base folds and water marks before reusing a box. An intact outline alone does not establish that the walls remain sound under load.
Remove obsolete identifiers
Remove or cover obsolete shipping identifiers and codes that could confuse sorting. Preserve labels needed for the current contents and any required safety information.
Decide whether to replace
Record visible damage, an opening base or softened walls. A weak box needs replacement rather than layers of tape that merely hide the defect. A softened corner and an obsolete label are different problems. Removing the label addresses parcel identification but does not repair weak walls or water damage at the base.
Measure the prepared parcel
Measure and weigh the prepared parcel even if old dimensions are printed on the box. Bulging or added protection may change its actual external measurements.
