Sketch the packing envelope
A star-shaped or letter-shaped item is not shipped according to its surface area alone. Sketch rectangular boundaries that contain it together with the necessary protection.
Measure extremities
Measure the furthest extremities in three directions, including any stand or projecting arm. Do not subtract the gaps between parts when estimating the package envelope.
Compare safe orientations
Compare two packing orientations while preserving the item's condition. Rotation may change box dimensions, but it does not justify compressing a fragile tip to make the box smaller. An irregular flat item spanning 40 cm does not become 20 cm wide because half its shape is empty. The package must accommodate its complete protected outline, not merely its material area.
Confirm the finished dimensions
Request the finished package dimensions and the carrier's method for the actual shape. The geometric envelope is a planning tool here, not a shipping tariff.
