The washing symbol
A tub symbol means machine washing, the number inside it is the maximum temperature, and a hand above it means hand wash. A piece that needs hand washing is a very different commitment from a daily machine piece.
The drying symbol
A square with a circle inside means a tumble dryer, the dots inside are the heat level and a cross over it forbids the dryer. A square without a circle means air drying, and its lines show flat or hanging.
The ironing symbol
An iron with dots shows the ironing level: one dot is low and three are high, and a cross forbids ironing. A shirt that needs ironing after every wash is different work from a fabric that needs none.
Other symbols
A triangle means bleach and a circle means dry cleaning, and a cross over any symbol forbids that step. Read the whole line on the page before ordering; it is the practical summary of the piece's lifespan.
