Cylinders in Cartons: Which Volume Counts?

For a cylinder packed in a carton, use the final outside carton dimensions rather than the geometric cylinder volume. The empty carton corners still occupy parcel space.

A cylinder inside a rectangle

For a cylinder standing upright, its diameter sets two sides of the surrounding rectangular space. The cylinder volume or its capacity in litres is different from that rectangular volume.

An example before packing

A cylinder 20 cm across and 30 cm tall fits a bounding space of 20 × 20 × 30 cm, or 12,000 cubic centimetres. These example dimensions exclude carton walls and protective material.

Protection changes dimensions

Padding, carton thickness and the chosen orientation affect the final parcel. Request the finished outside measurements instead of reusing the original diameter and height or subtracting empty corners.

Volumetric weight comes later

Converting volume to chargeable weight requires the route divisor and a comparison with actual weight. Use confirmed data in the calculator or ask for the applicable method; this example gives no shipping price.

Common questions

Should I use the mathematical cylinder volume?

Use the outside shipping parcel dimensions for its volume.

Does the example include protection?

No, it describes the bounding space before packing.

How do I convert volume to weight?

Use the confirmed route divisor and compare actual weight.
