Fabric Rolls to Saudi Arabia: Weight or Volume?

A roll of fabric is relatively heavy because it is wound tight, so usually calculate it by weight, then compare with volume if the types are light such as chiffon. Ask the supplier for the roll’s weight, width and length before ordering, do not assume two rolls of the same length weigh the same, and work out the cost per metre after adding its share of freight and customs.

Why fabric is heavy

A roll is cloth wound around a tube under tension, so it becomes a dense cylinder weighing more than someone counting by the metre expects. Denim, velvet and plush are much heavier than chiffon and crepe at the same length. The difference can change the carton you need entirely, so do not estimate weight from the roll length alone.

Ask the supplier three questions

Ask the supplier for the roll’s weight in kilograms, the fabric width, and the length in metres, from which you work out the weight per metre. If they give the gross weight with packaging, subtract roughly the tube and the bag. Do not compare two rolls of different types by length only; compare the cost per metre after shipping.

Weight or volume

Dense rolls are calculated by weight because they reach a large weight in a small volume, while light, airy fabrics such as chiffon may be calculated by volume because they fill the carton before they get heavy. Multiply the dimensions of the carton you will ship, compare it with its weight, and use the calculator to see which is higher, since that is the figure the charge is built on and it varies with the shipment and destination.

Splitting and delivery

Gather the heavy types into cartons that two men can carry, and do not put chiffon on top of velvet. Write the type, colour and roll number on each carton so the workshop can count them in. Delivery reaches Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, and for trade shipments ask the Saudi import authority about requirements before buying, and give us the recipient’s national address number.

Common questions

Do I calculate a roll by weight or volume?

Usually by weight for dense types, though light ones such as chiffon may be higher by volume, so work out both.

What do I ask the supplier before ordering rolls?

The weight of the roll, the fabric width and the length in metres, to work out weight per metre.

How do I compare two fabrics?

By cost per metre after adding its share of freight and customs, not by roll length alone.
