Tapered Storage Boxes: Measure the Base

A tapered box may be wider at the top than at the base. Measure the internal base and usable height under the closed lid, rather than relying on outside dimensions or capacity.

Top and base differ

Compare the internal base width with the width inside the upper rim. An item can pass the top and still stop before reaching the bottom as the sides narrow.

Trace the item footprint

Cut paper to the footprint of the item and compare it with the base measurements. This checks shape and dimensions, not weight capacity or material suitability for special contents.

The lid uses space

Look for an inner rim or moulded parts below the lid. Outside height can include feet and the lid itself, so it does not equal clear storage height.

Request three measurements

Ask for internal base length, internal base width and clear height with the lid closed. State whether the item will stand or lie down, since its orientation changes the dimensions needed.

Common questions

Does capacity in litres prove a book will fit?

No, check clear base dimensions and height.

Why can an item enter and then get stuck?

The sides may narrow toward the bottom.

Is outside height enough?

Ask for internal height under the closed lid.
