Ton or Cubic Metre: Shipping Turkey to Syria

The MarkaShip Syria tables publish a ton rate and a cubic-metre rate for each region: the north (Idlib and Aleppo) $200 per ton and $60 per m3, the centre (Homs and Hama) $225 and $70, and Damascus $250 and $85, all excluding customs. By arithmetic, light bulky goods compare better on the ton rate and dense heavy goods on the cubic-metre rate; the basis actually used is confirmed in each quote.

Published rates by region

The published tables are in US dollars and exclude customs. North (Idlib and Aleppo): $200 per ton and $60 per cubic metre. Centre (Homs and Hama): $225 per ton and $70 per cubic metre. South (Damascus): $250 per ton and $85 per cubic metre. Carton rates sit next to them, but they suit small parcels rather than trader shipments.

How to compare the two units

Dividing the ton rate by the cubic-metre rate gives a break-even density: about 300 kg per m3 in the north, about 311 in the centre and about 340 in Damascus. Goods lighter than that per cubic metre, such as packed fabrics or light plastics, work out cheaper on the ton rate; heavier goods, such as tiles or canned food, work out cheaper on the cubic-metre rate. This is an illustration from published figures, not a promise of how a quote is built.

Example: light bulk against dense cargo

A light shipment of 6 cubic metres weighing 800 kg to Aleppo is $360 at the cubic-metre rate and $160 at the ton rate. A dense shipment of 1 cubic metre weighing 1000 kg is $60 at the cubic-metre rate and $200 at the ton rate. The gap shows why you should give both volume and weight when asking for a quote.

Before you request a quote

Estimate volume and weight after packing, name the region and city, and check the list of items restricted for Syria. Customs are not included in these tables, so ask your importer or clearing agent.
